How to Use a CBT Practice Platform to Prepare for Exams
Most of us have done it. You open a practice quiz, click through the questions, see your score, feel good or bad for ten seconds, and close the app. Nothing changes. The next quiz goes the same way.
A CBT practice platform only helps if you use it like a training ground, not a scoreboard. Here is how.
Start with a baseline
Before you revise a course, take one full quiz cold. No notes, no peeking. The score doesn't matter much. What matters is the list of topics that surprised you. That list is your real syllabus for the next few days.
Switch the timer on early
Many students leave the timer for the week before exams. That's a mistake. Reading fast, deciding fast and clicking accurately are skills, and they need weeks, not days. Even if you slow down later to learn a hard topic, take a timed quiz at least twice a week.
Treat every wrong answer as a clue
When you miss a question, don't just look at the right option and move on. Ask yourself which of these happened:
- You didn't know the topic at all.
- You knew it but misread the question.
- You narrowed it to two options and guessed wrong.
- You ran out of time and rushed.
Each one needs a different fix. Not knowing means go back to your notes. Misreading means slow down on the first read. Guessing means you half-know the topic and need one more pass at it.
Keep a small mistakes notebook
One line per mistake is enough: the topic, the correct answer, and why you got it wrong. Before your next session, read the notebook first. After a couple of weeks you will notice the same few topics keep showing up. Those are where your marks are hiding.
Repeat quizzes, but not too soon
Retaking the same questions the same day only tests your short-term memory. Come back after two or three days. If you still get a question right, you actually know it.
Don't use it as a substitute for your lecture notes
Practice questions show you what to study, but they can't teach a topic from scratch. If a whole area keeps going wrong, close the quiz, open your notes or textbook, and learn it properly. Then come back and test yourself.
A simple weekly routine
- Day 1: cold quiz on a course, note the weak topics.
- Days 2 to 4: revise those topics from your notes.
- Day 5: timed quiz again and compare.
- Day 6: review only the questions you missed.
Do this and the platform stops being a place where you check your score and becomes the place where your score improves. You can create a free account and try the GST questions to see how it feels.
